The invisible congregation

For every person sitting in your physical building on Sunday, there are between two and five people watching your service online. They are watching consistently — some of them have been watching for months. They know the pastor's preaching style. They have heard the same sermon series as your in-person congregation.

But your church has almost no knowledge of who they are, no way to reach them, and no infrastructure to disciple them. They are a congregation that exists entirely outside your pastoral visibility.

THE DISCIPLESHIP MANDATE

The Great Commission is not addressed to buildings — it is addressed to disciples. "Go and make disciples" applies to every person who encounters your ministry, regardless of whether they sit in a pew. The online viewer who has watched your church for three months deserves the same pastoral care as the person in the third row.

Step 1 — Capturing online viewers

  1. Step 1: Live Broadcast CTAs During your service, at the moment of highest spiritual engagement, invite online viewers: "If you are watching online and this message is speaking to you, type the word CONNECT in the comments right now." Have a team member respond to every comment within minutes.
  2. Step 2: Comment Automation with ManyChat Connect ManyChat to your Facebook and Instagram Live. Configure it to automatically send a private message to every person who comments a keyword — delivering a digital connect card link within seconds of their comment.
  3. Step 3: Pinned Connect Card Link During every livestream, pin a comment with a direct link to your digital connect card. Include it in your video description and bio link.

“Your building can seat 500 people. The internet has no seats.”

The 90-day Online Discipleship Pathway

  1. Days 1–30: Phase 1 — Identity Establishing belonging and communicating grace. Every touchpoint answers: "Do I belong here?" Includes: pastor welcome video Day 1, weekly devotional email sequence, church values introduction, and new believer resources where applicable.
  2. Days 31–60: Phase 2 — Community Moving from passive viewer to active participant. Includes: online community group invitation, prayer partnership introduction, thematic devotional series, and for local viewers, an online-to-in-person bridge invitation.
  3. Days 61–90: Phase 3 — Ownership Awakening calling and contribution. Includes: spiritual gifts assessment, serving opportunity presentation, ministry team introduction, formal membership pathway for local viewers, and a personal pastoral check-in.

The online-to-physical bridge

For online viewers who are geographically local to your church, the discipleship pathway should include an explicit bridge to physical attendance. Around Week 6 — after the viewer has been through the Identity phase and feels genuine community connection — introduce the Plan Your Visit invitation.

This single invitation, sent at the right moment to a viewer who already feels connected to your ministry, converts online engagement into physical attendance far more effectively than any advertising campaign.
