What an Algorithmic Tract is

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Evangelical movement distributed millions of paper tracts — short, single-topic pieces of printed content designed to be given to strangers and read by people who had never encountered the Gospel.

The Algorithmic Tract applies that exact methodology to the short-form video era. It is a 30–90 second piece of content built specifically to be discovered by people who are not following your church, do not know your pastor, and have never seen your ministry before.

THE KEY DISTINCTION

Most church social media content is made for the people who already follow you. An Algorithmic Tract is made for people who have never heard of your church. Everything about it — topic, title, thumbnail, opening line, length — is chosen for strangers, not for your congregation.

“I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.”

— 1 Corinthians 9:22

The anatomy of an effective Algorithmic Tract

  1. Step 1: The first three seconds This is the only moment that matters for algorithmic distribution. Your opening must immediately name something the viewer feels: "If you have ever felt like your life has no point" or "Nobody talks about what happens after you lose someone." Direct, emotional, specific.
  2. Step 2: The topic — pain-first, not Gospel-first Begin where the viewer is: in their grief, their confusion, their loneliness. The Gospel is the resolution, not the premise. Trust the Spirit to work through the content once the viewer has recognized themselves in the opening.
  3. Step 3: The length — 30 to 90 seconds Short-form discovery algorithms favor content that is watched to completion. A 60-second video watched completely sends stronger distribution signals than a 5-minute video watched for 60 seconds. Say one thing. Say it clearly.
  4. Step 4: The close — a soft, genuine invitation End with an open, non-pressuring invitation: "If this connected with something you are feeling, the link is in my bio." No hard sell. No event promotion. Just a genuinely pastoral close that opens a door.

Topics that trigger discovery

  • Grief and loss — what to do when someone you love dies
  • Purpose and meaning — why it feels like something is missing
  • Forgiveness — how to forgive when you don't feel like forgiving
  • Loneliness — the lie that you are the only person who feels this way
  • Anxiety and fear — what to do when your thoughts won't stop
  • Doubt — what to do if you are not sure you believe anymore
  • Identity — what you are actually worth and who gets to decide

How to produce your first Algorithmic Tract this week

You do not need a video team. You need your phone, adequate lighting, and one clear thing to say. Record yourself speaking directly to camera for 60 seconds on one of the topics above. Edit in CapCut: trim the beginning and end, add your church name as a lower third, add captions. Post to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Your first tract will not be perfect. It will still reach people your regular content never reaches. The algorithm does not reward production quality — it rewards genuine engagement and topic resonance. Say something true. Say it plainly. That is an Algorithmic Tract.
