What the M-Index actually measures

Most pastors track Sunday attendance. Some track giving. Very few track the most important metric of all: how far does my sermon actually travel in the seven days after I preach it?

The M-Index — Multiplication Index — is the answer to that question. It is a simple score from 1.0× to 10.0× that measures the number of distinct platform touchpoints your sermon reaches beyond the Sunday service. Each platform or format counts as one multiplication point.

A score of 1.0× means your sermon exists only in the room on Sunday morning. A score of 8.0× means that same sermon has been deployed as a short video clip, a mid-week devotional, a WhatsApp broadcast, a newsletter, a small group guide, a prayer prompt, a podcast episode, and a searchable blog post — all within 48 hours of preaching.

“Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.”

— Matthew 25:23

Why most churches score under 2.0×

The gap between a 1.2× average and an 8.0× standard is not a gap in the quality of preaching. It is a gap in infrastructure. Large churches with communications teams naturally score higher. But the vast majority of churches have no production infrastructure at all.

The pastor preaches. Someone uploads the video. That is the entire content strategy for most churches. The M-Index does not judge the quality of the sermon. It measures what happens to the sermon after Sunday — and for most churches, almost nothing does.

THE STEWARDSHIP CONVICTION

A low M-Index is not a technology problem. It is a stewardship problem. The same theology that governs financial giving governs how we steward the messages God gives us to preach. The Word does not expire. The archive does.

How to calculate your own M-Index

To calculate your current M-Index, count how many of the following your church consistently produces from each sermon every week:

  • YouTube or Facebook upload with optimized title and description (+1.0)
  • Short video clip — Reel, Short, or TikTok — from a sermon highlight (+1.0)
  • Mid-week devotional post on Facebook, blog, or Instagram (+1.0)
  • Email devotional sent to congregation list (+1.0)
  • WhatsApp broadcast message with sermon insight (+1.0)
  • Small group discussion guide produced and distributed (+1.0)
  • Prayer prompt graphic created and shared (+1.0)
  • SEO-optimized blog post published on church website (+1.0)

How to improve your M-Index

  1. Step 1: Week 1 — Add the devotional post Write 150–200 words from your sermon's main point and post to Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday. This alone moves most churches from 1.0× to 2.0×.
  2. Step 2: Week 2 — Add the WhatsApp broadcast Send the devotional to your congregation WhatsApp broadcast list. Same content, new channel. M-Index moves to 3.0×.
  3. Step 3: Week 3 — Add the email devotional If you have an email list, send the devotional as a mid-week email with a compelling subject line. M-Index moves to 4.0×.
  4. Step 4: Week 4 — Add the video clip Identify the best 60-second moment from your sermon recording. Trim in CapCut and post as a Reel. M-Index moves to 5.0×. Continue adding weekly.

The 8.0× standard — what it looks like in practice

At 8.0×, your Sunday sermon reaches your in-person congregation in the room, your online viewers through the full recording, your short-form audience through a Reel, your email subscribers through a newsletter, your WhatsApp community through a broadcast, your small group leaders through a discussion guide, your social media followers through a prayer prompt graphic, and the entire internet through a searchable blog post.

That is the stewardship standard. That is the mission. And it begins with one habit, added one week at a time.
